ヨセフス「ユダヤ古代史」による四教派と洗礼者ヨハネの紹介

フラヴィウス・ヨセフスは西暦37年エルサレムに生まれ、78年に「ユダヤ戦記」、93年に「ユダヤ古代史」をギリシャ語で著しました

ローマに反乱して起こしたユダヤ戦争が神殿の焼失という徹底的敗北で終わった(70年)後ユダヤ人の長い歴史をローマ人とヘレニズム社会に訴えるのが目的です

ヨセフスの著作は各国語に訳され広く読まれて来ました

ここではウイリアム・ウイストンの英訳(1737年)を紹介するとともに、その英訳をピリオド等によって区切りながら日本語対訳(私訳)してみました

日本語対訳(私訳)した部分は「ユダヤ古代史」巻18の1章1-6と5章2の記述です

1章1-6はユダスの新興教派がユダヤを破壊したことと旧来の三教派ファリサイ派サドカイ派エッセネ派を(「ユダヤ戦記」に引き続き)紹介しています

5章2は洗礼者ヨハネの死について記しています

CHAPTER 1.

1章

HOW CYRENIUS WAS SENT BY CAESAR TO MAKE A TAXATION OF SYRIA AND JUDEA;

如何にシリアとユダヤに課税する為カエサルによってキリニウスが派遣されたか

AND HOW COPONIUS WAS SENT TO BE PROCURATOR OF JUDEA;

そして如何にコポニウスがユダヤの行政長官になる為に派遣されたか

CONCERNING JUDAS OF GALILEE AND CONCERNING THE SECTS THAT WERE AMONG THE JEWS.

ガリラヤのユダスにつして　そしてユダヤ人の間に存在した教派について

NOW Cyrenius,

さてキリニウスは

a Roman senator,

ローマの元老院議員

and one who had gone through other magistracies,

そして他の諸々の行政長官を経験した者

and had passed through them till he had been consul,

そしてそれらを経て執政官までなった者

and one who, on other accounts, was of great dignity,

そして他の理由で大いなる威厳を持つ者

came at this time into Syria,

この時シリアに来ました

with a few others,

少数の他の者と共に

being sent by Caesar to he a judge of that nation,

カエサルによって派遣されて　その国を裁く為

and to take an account of their substance.

そして彼等の資産を算定する為

Coponius also,

コポニウスも又

a man of the equestrian order,

騎士階級の男

was sent together with him,

彼と共に派遣されました

to have the supreme power over the Jews.

ユダヤ人の上に最高権力を持つ為

Moreover,

その上

Cyrenius came himself into Judea,

キリニウスは彼自身ユダヤに来ました

which was now added to the province of Syria,

そこは今やシリアの州に加えられていました

to take an account of their substance,

彼等の資産を算定する為

and to dispose of Archelaus's money;

そしてアルケラウスの金を始末する為

but the Jews,

しかしユダヤ人は

although at the beginning they took the report of a taxation heinously,

当初彼等は税の報告を最悪のことと捉えたにも拘らず

yet did they leave off any further opposition to it,

彼等はそれ以上それに反対することを止めました

by the persuasion of Joazar,

ヨアザルの説得によって

who was the son of Beethus,

ビースァスの息子であった者

and high priest;

そして大祭司

so they,

そこで彼等は

being over-pesuaded by Joazar's words,

gave an account of their estates,

without any dispute about it.

それについて何ら争うことなく

Yet was there one Judas,

しかしユダスという者がいました

a Gaulonite,

ガウロニテ人

of a city whose name was Gamala,

ガマラという名の町出身の

who, taking with him Sadduc,  a Pharisee,

その者はファリサイ派のサドゥクを伴って

became zealous to draw them to a revolt,

反乱に彼等を引き込むことに熱中しました

who both said that this taxation was no better than an introduction to slavery,

この税は奴隷の身分への序曲同然であると両者は言いました

and exhorted the nation to assert their liberty;

そして彼等の自由を主張するように民族に強く勧めました

as if they could procure them happiness and security for what they possessed,

あたかも彼等が手に入れることが出来るかのように　彼等が持っていた幸福と安全を

and an assured enjoyment of a still greater good,

そしてもっと大きな利益の確かな喜びを

which was that of the honor and glory they would thereby acquire for magnanimity.

それは彼等がそれによって大量に手に入れることになる誉れと栄光という利益でした

They also said that God would not otherwise be assisting to them,

彼等は又言いました　神は他の方法で彼等を助けないだろう

than upon their joining with one another in such councils as might be successful,

成功し売るそのような協議で彼等が互いに仲間になるより他の

and for their own advantage;

そして彼等自身の利益の為に

and this especially,

そしてこれは特に

if they would set about great exploits,

もし彼等が偉大な英雄的行為について示すなら

and not grow weary in executing the same;

そしてまさにそれを実行することに倦み疲れないなら

so men received what they said with pleasure,

それで男たちは彼等が言ったことを喜んで受け入れました

and this bold attempt proceeded to a great height.

そしてこの大胆な企ては凄い高さまで進みました

All sorts of misfortunes also sprang from these men,

これらの男たちからあらゆる種類の災いが跳び出てきました

and the nation was infected with this doctrine to an incredible degree;

そしてこの国はこの教義に信じられない程度まで感染しました

one violent war came upon us after another,

激しい戦争が相次いで私たちの上に臨みました

and we lost our friends which used to alleviate our pains;

そして私たちの痛みをいつも軽減していた私たちの友たちを私たちは失いました

there were also very great robberies and murder of our principal men.

又私たちの主要な男たちが非常に多く奪われ殺されました

This was done in pretense indeed for the public welfare,

実に公共の幸せの為と見せかけてこれは為されました

but in reality for the hopes of gain to themselves;

しかし本当は彼等自身の利益を望む為です

whence arose seditions,

そこから扇動が起きました

and from them murders of men,

そして彼等から男たちの殺人が

which sometimes fell on those of their own people,

それは時には彼等自身の人々の上に降り掛かりました

(by the madness of these men towards one another,

これらの男たちの狂気が互いの者に向かうことによって

while their desire was that none of the adverse party might be left,)

and sometimes on their enemies;

a famine also coming upon us,

reduced us to the last degree of despair,

as did also the taking and demolishing of cities;

the sedition at last increased so high,

that the very temple of God was burnt down by their enemies' fire.

Such were the consequences of this,

この結果はそのようでした

that the customs of our fathers were altered,

私たちの父祖の慣習が変えられました

and such a change was made,

そしてそのような変化が為されました

as added a mighty weight toward bringing all to destruction,

全てを破壊に導く方向に巨大な重量が加えられるような

which these men occasioned by their thus conspiring together;

それはこれらの男たちがこのように共謀したことによって引き起こしたこと

for Judas and Sadduc,

ユダスとサドゥクの為に

who excited a fourth philosophic sect among us,

それは私たちの間で第四の教派を起こした者

and had a great many followers therein,

filled our civil government with tumults at present,

and laid the foundations of our future miseries,

by this system of philosophy,

which we were before unacquainted withal,

concerning which I will discourse a little,

and this the rather because the infection which spread thence among the younger sort,

The Jews had for a great while had three sects of philosophy peculiar to themselves;

ユダヤ人は長い間彼等独特の哲学の三教派を持っていました

the sect of the Essens,

エッセネ派

and the sect of the Sadducees,

そしてサドカイ派

and the third sort of opinions was that of those called Pharisees;

そして第三の考えの教派はファリサイ派と呼ばれました

of which sects,

その教派について

although I have already spoken in the second book of the Jewish War,

私は既に「ユダヤ戦記」の巻二で話しました

yet will I a little touch upon them now.

それでも私は今それらについて少し触れます

Now,

さて

for the Pharisees,

ファリサイ派について

they live meanly,

彼等は粗衣粗食で暮らしします

and despise delicacies in diet;

そして食事での美味を軽蔑します

and they follow the conduct of reason;

そして彼等は道理の導きに従います

and what that prescribes to them as good for them they do;

彼等の為に善いこととして彼等に指示することを彼等は実行します

and they think they ought earnestly to strive to observe reason's dictates for practice.

そして実行を命じる道理を守る為に熱心に尽力すべきであると彼等は考えます

They also pay a respect to such as are in years;

彼等は又年上である者たちに尊敬を払います

nor are they so bold as to contradict them in any thing which they have introduced;

彼等が始めたことについて何事も彼等に敢えて反対しません

and when they determine that all things are done by fate,

そして全てのことは運命によって為されると彼等が決める時も

they do not take away the freedom from men of acting as they think fit;

人々が当を得ていると考えて行動する自由を彼等は取り去りません

since their notion is,

何故なら彼等の考えは

that it hath pleased God to make a temperament,

一つの気質を作ることは神を喜ばせる

whereby what he wills is done,

それ故に彼の望むことが為される

but so that the will of man can act virtuously or viciously.

しかしそれで人の意志は高潔に或いは不道徳に振る舞うことができる

They also believe that souls have an immortal rigor in them,

彼等は又信じています魂は彼等の中で不死の固まりを持つと

and that under the earth there will be rewards or punishments,

そして地の下で報い又は罰があると

according as they have lived virtuously or viciously in this life;

彼等がこの世で高潔に又は不道徳に暮らした次第で

and the latter are to be detained in an everlasting prison,

そして後者は永遠の監獄に拘留されます

but that the former shall have power to revive and live again;

しかし前者は生き返って再び生きると

on account of which doctrines they are able greatly to persuade the body of the people;

彼等は人々の体を大いに説得できる教義の故に

and whatsoever they do

そして何であれ彼等がすること

about Divine worship,

神に捧げる礼拝

prayers,

祈り

and sacrifices,

そして生贄について

they perform them according to their direction;

彼等の指示に従って彼等(人々)はそれらを実行しました

insomuch that the cities give great attestations to them on account of their entire virtuous conduct,

彼等の完全な徳行の故に町の人々が彼等に大いに配慮するまでに

both in the actions of their lives and their discourses also.

彼等の生活行動においても彼等の講演においても

But the doctrine of the Sadducees is this:

しかしサドカイ派の教義はこうです

That souls die with the bodies;

霊魂は肉体と共に死にます

nor do they regard the observation of any thing besides what the law enjoins them;

律法が彼等に命じること以外どんな意見も彼等は顧慮しません

for they think it an instance of virtue to dispute with those teachers of philosophy whom they frequent:

何故なら彼等は交流する哲学の教師たちと議論することは一つの徳行だと考えているから

but this doctrine is received but by a few,

しかしこの教義は少数だけに受け入れられています

yet by those still of the greatest dignity.

それでもまだ最高の位階の人々に

But they are able to do almost nothing of themselves;

しかし彼等は彼等自身でほとんど何もすることは出来ません

for when they become magistrates,

何故なら彼等が行政長官になる時

as they are unwillingly and by force sometimes obliged to be,

彼等はいやいやながら時には力ずくで強制されので

they addict themselves to the notions of the Pharisees,

ファリサイ派の考えに彼等自身を依存させます

because the multitude would not otherwise bear them.

さもないと大衆が彼等を支えないから

The doctrine of the Essens is this:

エッセネ派の教義は」こうです

That all things are best ascribed to God.

最善のことは全て神に帰すること

They teach the immortality of souls,

彼等は霊魂の不滅を教えます

and esteem that the rewards of righteousness are to be earnestly striven for;

そして正しい行いの報いはその為に熱心に努力することにあると考えます

and when they send what they have dedicated to God into the temple,

そして彼等は神に捧げる物を神殿に届ける時

they do not offer sacrifices because they have more pure lustrations of their own;

彼等は生贄を捧げません　彼等自身の儀式によって更に浄化された清い物を彼等は持つ故に

on which account they are excluded from the common court of the temple,

それ故に彼等は神殿の一般の中庭から締め出されています

but offer their sacrifices themselves;

しかし彼等自身で彼等の生贄を捧げます

yet is their course of life better than that of other men;

それでも彼等の人生行路は他の人々より優っています

and they entirely addict themselves to husbandry.

そして彼等は完全に農業に専念します

It also deserves our admiration,

それも又私たちの称賛に値します

how much they exceed all other men that addict themselves to virtue,

徳に専念する全ての他の人々を彼等ははるかに超えています

and this in righteousness;

そしてこれは正しさにおいて

and indeed to such a degree,

そして実際その程度まで

that as it hath never appeared among any other men,

どんな他の人々の間に決して現れなかったような

neither Greeks nor barbarians,

ギリシャ人も野蛮人も

no,

否

not for a little time,

暫時ではなく

so hath it endured a long while among them.

彼等の中で長い間持続しました

This is demonstrated by that institution of theirs,

これは彼等のその慣習によって実証されます

which will not suffer any thing to hinder them from having all things in common;

全ての物を共有することから彼等を妨げさせるものは何もないこと

so that a rich man enjoys no more of his own wealth than he who hath nothing at all.

それ故に富者は何も持たない者より以上に彼自身の富を享受しません

There are about four thousand men that live in this way,

この道で生活する男は約四千人います

and neither marry wives,

そして決して妻を娶りません

nor are desirous to keep servants;

又奴隷を持つことを望みません

as thinking the latter tempts men to be unjust,

後者は[男の]人を不正に誘惑すると〜考えるので

and the former gives the handle to domestic quarrels;

そして前者は家庭内の口論に機会を与えると

but as they live by themselves,

しかし彼等は彼等自身で生活するので

they minister one to another.

彼等は互いに奉仕します

They also appoint certain stewards to receive the incomes of their revenues,

彼等は又ある一定の執事たちを指名します　彼等の収入を受け取る為に

and of the fruits of the ground;

そして土地の実りを

such as are good men

立派な男たちであるような

and priests, who are to get their corn and their food ready for them.

そして祭司たちを　彼等の穀物と食べ物を彼等に準備する者たち

They none of them differ from others of the Essens in their way of living,

彼等の生活様式において彼等の誰もエッセネ派の他の者と異なることはありません

but do the most resemble those Dacae who are called Polistae [dwellers in cities].

しかしポリスタエ(町々の居住者)と呼ばれるダカエ人に最も似ています

But of the fourth sect of Jewish philosophy,

ユダヤ人の哲学の第四の教派の

Judas the Galilean was the author.

創始者はガリラヤ人ユダスでした

These men agree in all other things with the Pharisaic notions;

これらの男たちはファリサイ派の考えと他の全てのことで一致します

but they have an inviolable attachment to liberty,

しかし彼等は自由に対して冒すべからざる執着を持っています

and say that God is to be their only Ruler and Lord.

そして神は彼等の唯一の支配者であるべき主であると言います

They also do not value dying any kinds of death,

彼等は又どんな種類の死も惜しみません

nor indeed do they heed the deaths of their relations and friends,

又彼等の親類や友人の死を心に留めません

nor can any such fear make them call any man lord.

又彼等にどんな人をも主と呼ばせる可能性は全くありません

And since this immovable resolution of theirs is well known to a great many,

この断固とした彼等の決断力は大いに良く知られている故に

I shall speak no further about that matter;

その事について私は更に話すつもりはありません

nor am I afraid that any thing I have said of them should be disbelieved,

又彼等について私が言ったことが何も信じられないことを私は恐れません

but rather fear,

そうではなくむしろ恐れているのは

that what I have said is beneath the resolution they show when they undergo pain.

私が言ったことは彼等が苦痛に耐える時に彼等の示す決断力以下であること

And it was in Gessius Florus's time that the nation began to grow mad with this distemper,

その民族がこの病と共に狂気になり始めたのはゲッシオス・フロロスの時でした

who was our procurator,

彼は行政長官でした

and who occasioned the Jews to go wild with it by the abuse of his authority,

そして彼は彼の権限の乱用によってそれと共にユダヤ人を荒れ狂わせました

and to make them revolt from the Romans.

そしてローマ人からの反乱を彼等に起こさせました

And these are the sects of Jewish philosophy.

HEROD THE TETRARCH MAKES WAR WITH ARETAS,THE KING OF ARABIA, AND IS BEATEN BY HIM

四分領主ヘロデがアラビア王アレタスと戦争をして彼に打たれました

AS ALSO CONCERNING THE DEATH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST.

また洗礼者ヨハネの死について

HOW VITELLIUS WENT UP TO JERUSALEM;

如何にヴィテリウスはエルサレムに上って行ったか

TOGETHER WITH SOME ACCOUNT OF AGRIPPA AND OF THE POSTERITY OF HEROD THE GREAT.

アグリッパとヘロデ大王の子孫の報告も共に

Now some of the Jews thought that the destruction of Herod's army came from God,

さてヘロデの軍隊の潰滅は神から来たものであるとユダヤ人の或る人たちは考えました

and that very justly,

そしてそれはまさに当然なこととして

as a punishment of what he did against John,

ヨハネに対して彼が為した事の罰として

that was called the Baptist:

それは洗礼者と呼ばれた者

for Herod slew him,

何故ならヘロデは彼を殺したから

who was a good man,

彼は立派な男でした

and commanded the Jews to exercise virtue,

そしてユダヤ人に徳の実行を命じました

both as to righteousness towards one another,

互いに対して正義も

and piety towards God,

そして神に対して敬虔を

and so to come to baptism;

そしてそれで洗礼に来ることを

for that the washing [with water] would be acceptable to him,

何故なら[水で]洗い清めることは彼に受け入れられるから

if they made use of it,

もし彼等がそれを用いるなら

not in order to the putting away [or the remission] of some sins [only],

或る罪を取り去る為だけではなく

but for the purification of the body;

体の清めの為に

supposing still that the soul was thoroughly purified beforehand by righteousness.

もし魂が義によって完全に前もって清められたなら

Now when [many] others came in crowds about him,

さて他の者が彼の周りに群れになって来た時

for they were very greatly moved [or pleased] by hearing his words,

何故なら彼等は彼の言葉を聞くことによって大いに感動したから

Herod,

ヘロデは

who feared lest the great influence John had over the people might put it into his power and inclination to raise a rebellion,

ヨハネが人々の上に大きな影響力を持ちそれが彼の権力を侵し反乱を起こす傾向にならないか彼は恐れました

(for they seemed ready to do any thing he should advise,)

何故なら彼が忠告することなら何でも彼等は実行する用意があるように見えたから

thought it best,

それを最善と考えました

by putting him to death,

彼を死刑にすることによって

to prevent any mischief he might cause,

彼が原因となるあらゆる災いを防ぐこと

and not bring himself into difficulties,

そして彼自身に困難を齎さないこと

by sparing a man who might make him repent of it when it would be too late.

遅すぎたと彼を後悔させる男を免れさせることによって

Accordingly he was sent a prisoner,

従って彼は囚人として送られました

out of Herod's suspicious temper,

ヘロデの疑い深い性質故に

to Macherus,

マカイルスに

the castle I before mentioned,

私が前に言及した砦

and was there put to death.

そしてそこで死刑にされました

Now the Jews had an opinion that the destruction of this army was sent as a punishment upon Herod,

さてユダヤ人はこの軍隊の破滅はヘロデの上に送られた罰という意見を持ちました

and a mark of God's displeasure to him.

そして神の彼に対する不快の印であると
